Hernando MS is the southern-most city in Desoto County and is located about 12 miles south of Memphis, TN. It is also the county seat. The municipal city limits encompass approximately 11.5 square miles and the 2006 population estimate was 10,580. These numbers do not include the outlying areas that make up the rest of Hernando. The city of Hernando is governed by a Mayor and a Board of Aldermen. It was named after the famous explorer, Hernando DeSoto and the town was incorporated in 1840. Downtown Hernando contains a classic "square" configuaration with the Desoto County Courthouse at its center. The courthouse is in the Classical Revival style and was built in 1940. Both the courthouse and the square were placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1997.

The schools in Hernando MS are under the Desoto County School System. The Desoto County school system is excellent and is one of the highest, if not the highest-ranking system in Mississippi. If you find yourself in Hernando around the middle of May, you will be able to attend the annunal Hernando A'Fair. This event features bands, food, and lots of family fun. For more information, visit the Hernando Main St. Chamber of Commerce. There are also several parks in Hernando MS. Some have paved walking trails. If history is your thing, plan a visit to the Desoto County Museum, located a little east of the town square on Commerce Street. The museum features the history of Desoto County from 1541 to the present. They also have bluegrass music on Thursday nights. There are many unique shops in Hernando, ranging from several overflowing "junk" stores (look for the coat of armor) to the Velvet Cream. The Velvet Cream is located on Highway 51 just north of the town square. Its strictly drive-through or walk-up, no seating and the parking lot is generally packed around lunch time.
